INJURY TITLE

Stress Fracture Fibula

INJURY OVERVIEW

Fracture to the smaller of the two bones in the lower part of your leg (shin)

INJURY IN-DEPTH INFORMATION

Unlike the tibia, the fibula plays a minimal role in weight bearing, so any stress fracture of the fibla is usually due to excessive muscle contraction around the bone.  For example, when pushing away from the floor from one foot to another, poor foot mechanics can make some of the muscle over work.  This can expose the bone to excessive forces and lead to a fracture.

COMMON SIGNS & SYMPTOMS

  • Gradual onset of pain
  • Pain locally over a specific site on the bone (known as a doorbell sign)
  • Pain on weight bearing
  • Pain on running

HOW IS IT ASSESSED

  • Clinical examination
  • X-Ray may not pick up a stress fracture straight away (but it will when the injury is old)
  • Bone scan or MRI scan will help diagnose the problem.

GENERAL TREATMENT

  • Relative rest
  • Gradual return to activity
  • Biomechanical review and improvement

Exercise Videos: i.e.

  • Rotator cuff strengthening
  • Pec stretch
  • Etc

WHICH HEALTH PROFESSIONAL TO CONSULT

PHYSIO     X

MEDIC     X

PODIATRY

Put an ‘X’ next to each health professional that most commonly deals with this injury.

i.e. tennis elbow would be Physio and Medic as injections are common, whereas for muscular LBP it would be Physio and not Medic as they would just refer them to a Physio.
